After hearing about the Bienenstock Furniture Library (thank you @jdagmi for the suggestion!), I knew I had to see it for myself. I decided to visit during my recent trip to High Point Market and I was not disappointed! I found an incredible resource of education, rare books, and historical documents in this High Point, NC gem.
Located in America’s furniture capital, the Bienenstock Furniture Library is the largest furniture specialty library in the world and a favorite to renowned interior designers such as @thomfilicia and @coreydamenjenkins. Founded by visionary Sandy Bienenstock in 1970, the library holds an incredible archive of approximately 5,000 volumes on furniture design, architecture, interiors, textiles, decorative arts, and woodworking. There are even several that date back to the 17th and 18th centuries.
Wandering the rooms, I felt a pull to dig deeper but I knew that experience would have to wait. This isn’t just a place to browse but an opportunity for the quiet study and awe of a living archive of our collective aesthetic memory. I’ll be returning often as there is so much to uncover, stories waiting patiently between the pages and parallels to be drawn. I look forward to sharing my findings with you!

A personal LH Discovery 💡
Not long after I founded The Lifestyle Historian, I bought a beautifully bound edition of Thomas Chippendale’s "The Gentlemen & CabinetMaker’s Director" at an antiques store in Virginia. My mind barely catalogued a faded inscription as I flipped through pages of exquisitely detailed furniture sketches. When recently made aware of the Bienenstock Library, I thought back to the book and scribbled note. It was signed: Sandy Bienenstock, 1941. A personal note from the founder himself, addressed to a colleague. Full circle doesn’t even begin to describe it for me.

Before there was a kitchen cupboard full of tea bags, there was the tea caddy, a beautifully crafted, lockable box that symbolized wealth, taste, and control. Thank you David Lindquist of @whitehallantiques for sharing details on these two stunning examples: a Georgian tea caddy from 1765 and a neoclassical version from the late 18th century.

In the 18th century, tea was a luxury item, imported at great expense by the East India Company. Ounce for ounce, it could rival gold in value. That’s why it wasn’t just stored, it was secured. The tea caddy, often locked and kept in the drawing room, was managed by the lady of the house herself. It held not only precious green and black tea leaves, but also sugar, which was equally expensive and imported from the colonies, often produced by enslaved labor in the Caribbean.

This Georgian tea caddy is a rare survivor, complete with original bracket feet and hardware. Those soft indentations on the lid? Centuries of the handle tapping the wood, a quiet rhythm of domestic ritual. Inside: three compartments not for blending, as some assume, but for separating teas and storing sugar. The center “mixing bowl” was not for mixing at all, but for sugar, reinforcing its status as a guarded commodity.

As the century progressed, caddies became more ornate, mirroring the aesthetics of the neoclassical movement with delicate veneers, symmetry, and lead-lined canisters made to match the outer box. The materials were as curated as the tea itself.

This was more than storage. It was part of the ceremony of tea, a social performance rooted in imperial trade, domestic roles, and European ideals of refinement. To open a tea caddy was to open a window into a world of global exchange, gendered authority, and carefully cultivated taste.

We are completely intrigued by these wonderful Benin Bronzes- beautiful artifacts that tell the story of an African kingdom’s artistry and rich history. The Benin Bronzes are a collection of metal plaques and sculptures that originally adorned the royal palace of the Kingdom of Benin, now modern-day Nigeria. These pieces showcase a range of historical scenes, from royal ceremonies to battles, but they are more than just art; they are a testament to the Kingdom of Benin’s legacy. They were used to celebrate the king’s power, commemorate victories, and honor ancestors.
Created using a lost-wax casting technique, the bronzes were made by skilled artisans who could work with copper, bronze, and brass. The designs on the bronzes often depicted royal figures, rituals, animals, and gods, each symbolizing important aspects of Benin culture. Some pieces also incorporate ivory, wood, and stone, inlaid for further decoration with intricate details that speak to the high regard for craftsmanship and the artistic talent in Benin society.
During the Benin Expedition of 1897, the Benin Bronzes were looted by British Forces and they are now housed in museums around the world. However, the Nigerian government is actively campaigning for their repatriation to their homeland.

Today’s LH Discovery:
The Benin Bronzes are believed to have been created by a guild of master artisans who were highly skilled and closely connected to the royal family. In fact, only the king, or Oba, had the right to commission these works. My father has always been a jack-of-all-trades, never without his tools. I remember the pride he took in them and how they were an extension of himself as he tackled a project from beautiful carpentry to his “honey-do” list. Tools like the drill, hacksaw, vice, chisels, hammers, screwdrivers, T-squares, planers, and levels have been the backbone of craftsmanship for centuries. These iconic hand tools have shaped everything from ancient monuments to today’s fine woodwork and engineering marvels.

But it’s not just the tools that tell the story—it’s the artisans and companies that made them. Highlighting here a few of the lesser known innovators that helped shape the world of craftsmanship.

J. Duncan & W.H. Talbot: These British toolmakers crafted finely made hand planes and other precision tools during the 19th century, focusing on metal-bodied planes, smoothers, and jack planes that were beloved by professional carpenters and collectors alike.

J.W. Stolle: Known for producing high-quality hand drills and other precision tools, Stolle’s legacy is rooted in his commitment to craftsmanship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His tools remain prized for their durability and functionality.

A.E. Tunstall: Known for its innovative design in the early 20th century, the Tunstall hand drill was a staple in many workshops. Its reliable mechanism made it an essential tool for both craftsmen and tradespeople, particularly in the era before power drills.

Today’s LH Discoveries 💡
The hammer dates back over 2 million years to prehistoric stone tools.
The screwdriver made its debut in the 1600s, but its modern form wasn’t perfected until the 1930s with the introduction of the Phillips-head design.

I was honored to serve on the committee for Design Matters - an incredible event in its third year that celebrates design, art, architecture, inspiration, and community at the historic Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill, NC!

The inspiration for my vintage-themed dressing room!

Discovering this framed cover of The Ladies Home Journal, @redbank_antiques solidified my vision of a dressing room that I designed and built over the summer. It also sparked my curiosity about the history of this iconic magazine.

Founded in 1883, The Ladies’ Home Journal was a trailblazer in women’s media, becoming the first magazine to reach a million subscribers by 1903. Initially focused on household management, it evolved into a vital platform addressing pressing social issues, from health to women’s rights, mirroring the changing roles of women in society. Its success was also due to its ability to embrace and portray a timeless, elegant style that resonated well with its audiences.

Throughout its history, the journal featured notable contributors, including Eleanor Roosevelt and Maya Angelou, providing a space for diverse voices. The “Woman’s Page” became a hallmark, blending practical advice with personal stories, while its recipes and DIY projects set trends in American households.

During World War II, “The Journal” embraced the narrative of women stepping into traditionally male roles, reflecting the urgent need for their contributions in the workforce. However, in the post-war era, it reverted to domestic themes, capturing societal pressures surrounding women’s roles as homemakers.

As the 20th century progressed, the rise of digital media ultimately led to the end of its print publication in 2014. Today, while its physical form has faded, the journal’s online presence continues to offer lifestyle content, preserving its legacy in a new format.

Today’s LH Discovery 💡
The Ladies Home Journal was ahead of its times because it was one of the only contemporary magazines explicitly dedicated to women and was remarkably attuned to social changes from the suffrage movement to the feminist revolution of the 1960s and beyond!

This Nickelodeon is the first of many finds from @redbank_antiques that we are excited to share!

Found in Asbury Park, NJ, in 1957, the coin-operated mechanical device is a throwback to the early days of short films and animations, entertaining audiences long before the kids’ TV channel, Nickelodeon, ever hit the airwaves!

The Nickelodeon concept evolved from the viewing booths of the 1890’s where visitors could look through a small hole to see moving images. A few years later Nickelodeon theaters debuted in Pittsburgh, offering short films that attracted a wide audience, especially working class families.

Initially, operating a Nickelodeon cost just a nickel, but prices rose over time based on location and demand. Despite changes, the classic nickel association remains iconic!

With the onset of the Roaring Twenties, larger movie theaters, and the introduction of feature-length films and “talkies,” the popularity of Nickelodeons began to decline. The silent film era now gone, Nickelodeons became irrelevant; however, their mark in the modern cinema experience had been made!

Today’s LH Discovery:
Regina Nickelodeons gained popularity in penny arcades and amusement parks, and were known for their intricate designs and elaborate cases, often featuring ornate woodwork and decorative elements. This may look like a simple serving tool but the marrow scoop—a relic from the refined dining rituals of 18th-century England - has a fascinating history!

Crafted with precision by esteemed silversmiths like Hester Bateman, marrow scoops were essential tools at the lavish tables of Georgian society. Designed to delicately extract marrow from bones served in elaborate dishes, these silver implements embodied both practicality and elegance.

Hester Bateman, a trailblazing figure in the silversmithing world, rose to prominence during a time when few women ventured into the trade. From her workshop in London, she not only mastered the art of crafting intricate silverware but also set new standards for quality and design. Her pieces, including the coveted marrow scoops, showcased a distinctive blend of simplicity and sophistication that captivated the Georgian elite.

As the 18th century unfolded, Georgian dining customs embraced the marrow scoop's graceful utility, reflecting a period where dining was an art form and etiquette was paramount. Hester Bateman's contributions to the craft extended beyond mere silverware; she embodied a spirit of innovation and excellence that elevated British silversmithing to new heights.

Today's LH Discovery:
While marrow scoops may not be featured in contemporary dining settings, the elongated handles have found new purpose as champagne stirrer, adding a touch of historical charm to modern-day celebrations and cocktail hours.

One more fun fact! Despite the high demand for her work, Hester Bateman never marked her pieces with her full name during her career. Instead, she used her initials "HB" and relied on the reputation of her craftsmanship to distinguish her creations.

In the late 19th century pipe smoking was common in social settings and considered a sophisticated and gentlemanly pursuit. It was a standard practice among many professionals, writers, and academics as the image of a thoughtful individual with a pipe became iconic during this era.

Meerschaum pipes with their intricate carvings and the ability to change color were especially fashionable.

Meerschaum, meaning “sea foam” in German and also referred to as sepiolite, is a soft white clay mineral mostly found in Turkey. Its malleable texture allows for detailed carvings and its porous nature absorbs nicotine and other elements from tobacco smoke, providing a cooler, drier, and more flavorful experience.

Initially, Austria led the charge in the 18th century for creating these pieces of art but it would not be long before Meerschaum pipes would become status symbols among the European elite. Artisans, particularly Vienna, carved intricate designs depicting classical and mythological themes. Over the years, meerschaum pipes would come in a variety of shapes and styles, including traditional shapes like billiards and bulldogs as well as more freeform or abstract designs.

One of the most fascinating aspects of meerschaum pipes is their ability to change color over time, developing a rich patina as it transitions from white to shades of amber, brown, and reddish hues.

While pipe smoking in general saw a decline after World War II with the increasing popularity of cigarettes and later the awareness of health risks, meerschaum pipes continue to be produced, primarily in Turkey, where traditional hand-carving techniques are preserved. They remain highly valued by pipe smokers and collectors around the world.

Today’s LH Discovery:
Sherlock Holmes, the iconic detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is often depicted with a curved meerschaum pipe, enhancing his image as a thoughtful and intellectual character.

I spent a lot of my childhood summers with my grandparents in the mountains of West Virginia. Across the country, general stores had begun to fade from popularity as chain supermarkets and department stores dotted the map; however, I was lucky enough to experience this cornerstone of small-town America. I may not have fully appreciated it at the time but I now have wonderful memories of long, hot days and that walk for a cherished RC Cola, Moon Pie, and penny candy.

General stores emerged in the 18th century, during the colonial period, primarily in rural and frontier areas. They provided settlers with essential goods that were otherwise hard to come by including food, clothing, and tools. These stores served as a hub for trading where customers could purchase or barter for items.

As America expanded westward, general stores spread to new towns and settlements, playing a crucial role in supporting pioneers and the development of new communities, offering a market for local produce and crafts, and serving as community gathering places for residents to socialize.

With the advent of department stores, mail-order catalogs, and the expansion of the railroad, general stores began to face increasing competition so they adapted by expanding their products and services. Yet where there is progress, there is also a decline and many general stores were not able to compete against new retail formats in the post-World War II era. Fortunately, nostalgia and a growing appreciation for local personalized shopping experiences has created a revival of interest in general stores with some modern iterations!

I remember the first time that my father installed a dishwasher in our home. Excitement does not even begin to describe my pre-teen emotions on having a machine that would reduce my amount of chores. While my children now take this convenience for granted, many of us still remember handwashing every dish and piece of cutlery several times a day. I had no idea that the concept of dishwashers had been around since the mid-19th century and we were just getting caught up to the times!

The first patent for a mechanical dishwasher was filed in 1850 by Joel Houghton but was largely ineffective. In the 1880s, Josephine Cochrane changed all of that with her practical dishwasher design that stemmed from her frustration with her servants constantly chipping her fine china while washing dishes by hand. Her first model was a wooden wheel dishwasher that she showcased at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Cochrane continued to refine her design, eventually patenting the more advanced copper boiler model that used high-pressure water jets.

Initially, Cochrane’s dishwasher was marketed towards commercial spaces but this invention would ultimately take hold in the 20th century and become one of the most popular and efficient household appliances. Cochrane’s company eventually became KitchenAid!

Over a century later, hundreds of brands manufacture a variety of dishwasher models around the world that include energy efficient and water-saving features.

Today’s LH Discovery 💡
Dishwashers have a variety of uses that go beyond just cleaning dishes. Did you know that there are recipes and techniques for cooking food in the dishwasher?

It is incredible to think that the concept of adding has a history! While the exact origin of the abacus is uncertain, it is believed to have been invented in ancient Mesopotamia around 2700-2300 BCE. The popularity of this simple contraption using beads or stones on rods or wires ultimately spread throughout ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and China as a tool to perform mathematical calculations.

The design of the abacus varied across cultures and time periods, with different forms including the Roman abacus, the Chinese suanpan, and the Japanese soroban. Each had its own unique features and methods of calculations yet despite the diversity of designs, the basic principle of the abacus remained consistent using bits elements to represent and manipulate numerical values.

One if its many contributions was that it allowed for rapid and accurate calculations, making it indispensable for merchants, traders, bankers, and scholars in ancient and medieval times. It goes without saying that the abacus was played an incredible part in the evolution of mathematical education as it provided a tangible and visual resource for learning numerical concepts.

Today’s LH Discovery:
The oldest known abacus is the Salamis Tablet, circa 300 BCE, found on the Greek island of Salamis in the early 19th century. While not the typical bead-style, the Salamis Tablet is made of marble and features a grid of holes arranged in columns and row. It is considered to be one of the earliest examples of a calculated device and can be viewed at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens in Greece.

Despite advancements in technology, the abacus is still used today in many parts of the world, particularly Asia. Also, in some cultures, the abacus is regarded as a symbol of prosperity, intelligence and success!

I have wonderful memories of Easter egg hunts during the holiday weekend. I would don beautiful eyelet gowns that my maternal grandmother made for me, and of course add a floppy hat, matching purse, and the delicate white gloves. Then I would roam the fields behind our church or community center to tuck away as many of the pastel colored treasures in my wicker basket. I never quite understood how this fun and exciting tradition related to the Christian holiday...until now!

Early Christians adopted the egg as a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Eggs were actually dyed red to represent the blood of Christ and were often given as gifts to commemorate Easter. This tradition spread throughout Europe and became more elaborate over time.

However, the concept of eggs as symbols of rebirth and fertility dates back thousands of years to ancient pagan celebrations of spring. Many cultures, including the Egyptians, Persians, and the Greeks, exchanged eggs during spring festivals to celebrate new life.

In medieval Europe, eggs were often decorated with intricate designs and patterns using wax and natural dyes. These decorated eggs were exchanged as gifts and used in Easter games and fêtes.

The Russian Orthodox Church has a long-standing tradition of decorating Easter eggs, known as pysanky. These eggs symbolize various aspects of the Christian faith and mix in cultural folklore.

Today’s LH Discovery:
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the House of Fabergé, founded in 1842 by Peter Carl Fabergé in Russia, created beautiful jeweled eggs as Easter gifts for the Russian imperial family. These ornate and luxurious eggs were crafted from precious metals and gemstones, elevating the tradition of Easter egg gifting to new heights of artistry and craftsmanship.

Easter Egg hunts take place all over the world such as the Easter Fair at Traquair in Scotland, and Cypress Gardens Adventure Park in Winter Haven, Florida, which currently hold the Guinness World Record for largest Easter egg hunt!

In today’s modern age, there are a multitude of ways to track time but thousands of years ago, people relied on the concept of sand flowing from one bulb to another at a consistent rate.
Hourglasses, also known as sandglasses or sand timers, are believed to have originated in ancient Egypt around 1500 BC. Initially, these early timekeeping devices consisted of two glass bulbs connected by a narrow neck. During the Middle Ages, they became popular maritime instruments, used aboard ships for timing tasks such as navigation, cooking, and monitoring the duration of shifts. Their simplicity and reliability made them valuable tools in an era when accurate timekeeping was essential for safe navigation and survival skills.
One notable enhancement to the hourglass was made by the Venetian monk and inventor, Marino Marini, in the 14th century. Marini improved the hourglass by adding an adjustable metal collar around the neck, allowing the user to control the flow of sand and adjust the duration of time measured by the hourglass. This innovation made hourglasses even more versatile and practical for a wide range of timekeeping purposes.
Throughout history, hourglasses came in various sizes, with different durations ranging from minutes to hours. They were also used in various industries, including manufacturing, where they helped regulate the timing of processes.
Despite their lack of continued practicality, hourglasses have been used decoratively throughout history. They are often crafted with intricate designs and materials, making them popular as ornamental pieces in homes and offices.

Today’s LH Discovery 💡
One of the oldest hourglasses still in existence is the “Hourglass of Siena,” believed to have been made in the 14th century and housed in the Museo Galileo in Florence, Italy.

Other notable mentions include “The Eye of Time” located in the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, and The Burj Al Arab Hourglass in the lobby of the opulent Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai.

This wonderful Singer® sewing machine is a tribute to my grandmother who spent most of her life creating beautiful quilts, pillows, and clothing. I can still hear the constant whirring - a sound that I find comforting to this day. While I did not inherit the patience or talent to be a sewist, I have a deep appreciation for the history of this pastime.

Various inventors contributed to the development of the sewing machine. In 1790, English inventor Thomas Saint created the first known design; however, his machine was never built. In 1830, French tailor Barthelemy Thimonnier patented a machine that used a hooked needle and a single thread to create a chain stitch. He opened the world’s first sewing machine factory and began mass-producing machines for use in garment production though destruction of his factory would halt his fame and notoriety. Other inventors’ efforts were also thwarted as the misconception grew that the sewing machine would result in unemployment.

In 1851, Isaac Singer, an American actor and inventor, patented his own sewing machine that featured several improvements including a foot treadle for powering the machine and a horizontal needle movement. Singer’s subsequent partnership with Edward Clark formed the Singer® Manufacturing Company and became one of the largest sewing machine manufacturers in the world.

The invention and widespread adoption of the sewing machine revolutionized the textile industry by empowering women to enter the workforce and making clothing production more efficient and affordable.

Today’s LH Discovery 💡
The Singer® Sewing Machine Company played a significant role during WWII by converting its production facilities to manufacture items needed for the war effort including ammunition belts and parachutes.

This Zen Table lamp from the creative geniuses @hubbardtonforge boasts a stunning lilac marble base with incredible detail. After seeing this piece of art in Hubbardton Forge’s showroom at The Dallas Market Center, I had to learn more about the history of lilac marble!

Lilac marble, also known as Lilac Breccia or Rosa Lilas marble, can feature a stunning blend of colors most notably in the lilac, pink, and white tones. While it has been used in architecture and sculptures throughout history, it gained attention specifically in the 19th century during the Romantic Period in Europe.

Lilac marble is quarried all over the world in places such as Portugal and Italy but has a rich significance in Turkey. There, Lilac Onyx or Lilac Limestone, is primarily quarried in the Afyon region, particularly around the town of Kocatepe. Turkey has been a major producer and exporter of marble for centuries, with various types of marble being used in famous historical structures such as the Hagia Sophia and the Temple of Artemis.

Lilac marble from Turkey gained prominence in the modern era due to its unique coloration and quality.The distinctive lilac hues and intricate veining patterns make Turkish lilac marble highly sought after in the global market.

Ever stop to think about the stories behind those small but mighty fasteners on your favorite jacket or blouse? From ancient embellishments to today’s fashion staples, buttons have a fascinating history worthy exploring!
Circa 2000 BCE, buttons were used in ancient civilizations such as The Indus Valley Civilization, as ornaments rather than fasteners. It was not until the 13th century that functional buttons made an appearance in Europe as decorative clasps for clothing. Initially made from materials like bone, wood, or metal, they became more elaborate and widespread during the Renaissance.
The modern button design, with a central hole and attached buttonhole was also devised during this time, ultimately leading to the invention of the buttonhook which helped fasten buttons on shoes and gloves that were difficult to reach.
While buttons are now completely commonplace, they were often used in the 18th and 19th centuries as a form of currency in the American colonies when traditional currency was scarce during the Civil War.
Some buttons have deeper meanings such as military buttons that can denote rank or affiliation while in fashion history, buttons have been used to denote social status and wealth with their use of precious metals and intricate designs.

One of the most valued and coveted buttons amongst collectors (or buttonology experts), is the “Napoleon Death Button” which is said to have come from the the coat that Napoleon Bonaparte wore during his exile on the island of St. Helena.

My recent antiquing adventure with @catnguyenphoto led me to this beautiful display of silver treasures @sleepypoetcharlotte, inspiring us to dig deeper into the history of silver through the ages!

The discovery of silver is traced back to ancient civilizations with the Greeks, Romans, and Chinese all utilizing this precious metal as a form of currency, contributing to its widespread population.

During the Spanish colonization of the Americas in the 16th century, vast amounts of silver were mined from regions like Potosí in present-day Bolivia. The influx of silver from the New World had significant economic consequences, contributing to the global trade networks of the time.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, silver became popular for creating elegant tableware, including candlesticks, tea sets, and serving dishes. These items were - and continue to be- status symbols showcasing wealth and refinement. Silver’s antimicrobial properties also contributed to its use in tableware, helping maintain hygiene during a time when water purification was limited.

In the 19th century, silver played a role in the establishment of the silver standard, where it was used alongside gold to back currency in various countries. However, this system faced challenges, leading to the eventual adoption of the gold standard.

Silver tends to tarnish over time due to exposure to air and sulfur-containing compounds. Regular polishing with silver polish or homemade solutions using baking soda and aluminum foil helps maintain its lustrous appearance.

Celebrating over a century of tradition in the heart of the city that never sleeps!

In 1904, the inaugural event by The New York Times marked the birth of the iconic Times Square celebration, complete with a dazzling fireworks display and the first-ever illuminated time ball drop. Organized by The New York Times’ owner Adolph Ochs in recognition of the opening of his new headquarters at One Times Square, the event displaced traditional celebrations that had normally been held at Trinity Church.

Three years later, Och decided he wanted a bigger spectacle and the newspaper’s chief electrician, Walter F. Palmer, suggested using a time ball.

Fun fact- the original ball drop in 1907 took place at midnight, not 11:59. It was not until 1938 that the event was switched to a countdown!

Several iterations of the ball have been constructed since its debut in 1907.

1907-1920: A 700-pound iron and wood sphere adorned with 100 light bulbs.

1920-1955: A more elaborate design featuring iron rings and thousands of light bulbs, lowered manually.

1955-1981: An aluminum ball with a diameter of 5 feet and weighing 150 pounds, marked the switch to an automated mechanism for lowering the ball.

1981-1988: A lighter, more energy-efficient aluminum ball adorned with red, white, and blue bulbs.

1989-1998: A ball covered in white lights with a mirrored surface, symbolizing the theme of “The Gift of Wisdom.”

The record for the most repetitions of the song in a single performance is held by The Irish Rovers. In 1982, they sang the song 1260 times continuously for charity!

The Nisse, also known as Tomte in Sweden and Denmark, is a mythical creature from Scandinavian folklore associated with Christmas. The tradition of the Nisse doll has its roots in old Norse beliefs, and has evolved into a beloved Christmas custom.

Considered a protective spirit associated with the household and farm, it was believed that treating the Nisse figure well would bring good fortune, while neglecting or offending it could lead to misfortune.

Over time, the Nisse became linked with Christmas, and its role transformed into that of a gift-bringer. It’s often depicted as a small, bearded creature wearing traditional Scandinavian clothing, often a red hat and coat.

The Nisse is seen as a guardian of the home and families would leave out offerings, such as porridge, to appease the Nisse and ensure its protection and goodwill.

Today, Nisse figures or dolls are placed prominently in many Scandinavian homes!

The Lifestyle Historian came across two very interesting traditions that take place on December 23rd. When conflicted, why not choose both? So today we are sharing the history behind The Night of the Radishes in Oaxaca, Mexico as well as Japan’s obsession with Kentucky Fried Chicken during the days leading up to Christmas!

🇲🇽 Tonight, Oaxaca, Mexico comes alive with vibrant carved radishes, a tradition dating back to the 18th century. Artisans showcase their skills in a radish-carving competition, transforming humble veggies into incredible masterpieces.

Legend has it that the tradition began when radishes were introduced to Mexico by Spanish colonizers. The crop adapted exceptionally well to the local soil. This unique experience, which emerged as a creative outlet for farmers to showcase their harvest skills during Christmas market, was soon adopted by artisans to turn simple radishes into intricate scenes, religious figures, and local symbols.

🇯🇵 On the other side of the world, lines will be wrapped around Kentucky Fried Chickens across Japan - a tradition that has its roots in a clever marketing campaign initiated by KFC Japan in the 1970s. In 1974, KFC launched the “Kentucky for Christmas” campaign, featuring a festive meal that included fried chicken, cake, and wine.

At the time, Western-style Christmas celebrations were gaining popularity in Japan, but the traditional Christmas turkey was not a common dish. KFC’s campaign offered a convenient and accessible alternative, portraying fried chicken as a special holiday treat. The concept took off, and over the years “Kurisumanasu ni wa Kentakki!” became a popular slogan.

Feuerzangenbowle is a traditional German alcoholic drink and one of the Lifestyle Historian’s favorite Christmas traditions! Usually consumed during the holiday season, the name translates to “fire-tongs punch” in English. The history of Feuerzangenbowle can be traced back to the early 19th century!

The drink itself is a variation of mulled wine and typically consists of red wine, citrus fruits, cloves, cinnamon, and sugar. What makes Feuerzangenbowle unique is the theatrical presentation: a sugarloaf soaked in rum is placed on a fire tong (metal grate) that is then set on a Rechaud. The sugarloaf is set on fire and allowed to slowly melt, dripping into the mulled wine. This creates a visually impressive display and adds a caramelized sweetness to the drink.

This tradition gained popularity in the 20th century partly due to the 1944 German film, “Die Feuerzangenbowle,” in the which the drink plays a central role. Today, it remains a festive and social beverage enjoyed during the winter months, especially around Christmas markets and holiday gatherings in Germany!

A little more history on sugarloafs! In ancient civilizations, including India and Persia, sugar was produced from sugarcane and the refined product was shaped into these distinctive conical or cylindrical forms which made them easier to handle. During medieval times in Europe, people would buy sugarloafs and then use tools to break or shave off the amount of sugar needed. With the development of granulated sugar, sugarloafs are less common today and used more for traditional or nostalgic rituals such as the Feuerzangenbowle.

Whether you carefully drape each strand of tinsel on the branches of your Christmas tree or gently toss it for a more spontaneous effect, know that there is more to the story of tinsel than meets the eye!

Tinsel is thought to have originated in Germany, where it was initially made from real silver- a nod to wealth and status. Over time, it evolved to include other materials like lead, aluminum, and eventually plastic.

However, tinsel is also associated with the Eastern European (specifically Ukrainian) folk tale of the Christmas spider. According to the story, a poor widow couldn’t afford to decorate her tree, and spiders in the house took pity. Overnight, they spun webs around the tree, and when the first light of Christmas morning touched the webs, they turned into real silver and gold, creating a beautiful, unexpected decoration. The tale is a whimsical explanation for the tradition of tinsel and reflects the idea of finding beauty in unexpected places!

In some cultures (Ukranian and Polish come to mind), many people include spider ornaments on their trees to commemorate the beloved tale!

✨ Prior to the 19th century, tinsel was actually used for royal clothing, masque costumes, and to adorn sculptures rather than Christmas trees. In fact, Elizabeth of York and Margaret Tudor both incorporated tinsel, tynsen, and tilsent in their opulent garb.

✨ In 1971, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States determined that lead tinsel caused potential health risks for children, resulting in a temporary shut down of tinsel manufacturing before safer resources were considered for production.

Today we revisit the stories we shared last week of St. Nicholas Day and delve a little further into the very warm and fuzzy traditions of Christmas stockings!

The most popular legend is that St. Nicholas, the 4th-century Christian saint known for his generosity, heard about a poor man who could not afford dowries for his three daughters. St. Nicholas decided to help by anonymously throwing bags of gold coins through the family’s open window, and these bags landed in the stockings hung by the fireplace to dry. This act of kindness is said to be the inspiration behind the tradition of hanging stockings for gifts.

The practice gained popularity in Europe and eventually made its way to different parts of the world. In the Netherlands, children would leave out shoes to be filled with treats by Sinterklaas, the Dutch version of St. Nicholas. This evolved into hanging stockings in other cultures.

The famous poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (more commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas”) by Clement Clarke Moore, published in 1823, further popularized the tradition. The poem describes St. Nicholas filling stockings with gifts and treats!

🔭Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) have celebrated Christmas by hanging stocking filled with small gifts.

🔥While fireplaces are the traditional spot for hanging stockings, families without fireplaces find creative alternatives such as staircases or bedposts.

🎅🏽In Australia and New Zealand, “large festive bags called Santa sacks” are instead used, holding a variety of gifts.

Today we recognize Santa Lucia Day, that honors Saint Lucy (Santa Lucia in Italian), a young Christian martyr who lived in Sicily during the Roman Empire. Lucy is believed to have lived in the early 4th century.

The most popular account of Saint Lucy’s life is that she dedicated herself to a life of Christian service. Legend has it that Lucy, wearing a wreath of candles to light her way, brought food to Christians hiding in the catacombs.

In Scandinavia, Santa Lucia Day is marked by processions, with a girl chosen to portray Lucia leading the way. Celebrations include singing traditional Santa Lucia songs that symbolize the triumph of light over darkness such as “Santa Lucia” and “Santa Lucia Santana.”

In Sweden specifically, the eldest daughter of the family often plays the role of Lucia, dressing in a white gown and wearing a crown of candles.

The day is seen as a herald of the Christmas season and a celebration of light during the darkest time of the year.

The tradition of Christmas trees has roots in medieval Germany, where people would bring evergreen trees into their homes and decorate them with candles. The practice became more widespread in the 19th century, popularized by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. In the United States, the tradition grew in the 19th century through German immigrants, and is now a central part of holiday celebrations worldwide- symbolizing life and renewal!

In the spirit of the giving season, today we are sharing many different LH Discoveries about Christmas Trees- there is so much to learn!

🎄The oldest recorded decorated Christmas tree was in 1510 in Riga, Latvia.

⭐️The tallest Christmas tree known was a Douglas Fir that measured 221 feet tall in Seattle, Washington, in 1950.

🎄The star on top of the tree is commonly associated with the Star of Bethlehem which guided the Magi to the birthplace of Jesus.

⭐️Ornaments that include fruits, nuts, and sweets symbolize abundance and generosity.

🎄Tinsel was originally made from real silver, representing wealth and prosperity.

⭐️Real candles were initially tied to branches to illuminate Christmas trees (credit goes to 16th century Protestant Reformer Martin Luther) before Edward Johnson, an associate of Thomas Edison, invented an electrically lit Christmas tree in 1882.

🎄The largest display of Christmas lights on an artificial tree included 518,838 lights and was achieved in 2015 in Italy.

⭐️In the late 19th century, companies in Germany started producing artificial trees by using dyed goose feathers.

🎄President Calvin Coolidge began the tradition of lighting a Christmas tree outside the White House in 1923. Eight years later, the first Christmas tree at Rockefeller center was erected.

⭐️There are 35 different species of trees used as Christmas trees around the world with the most popular being fir, pine, and spruce varieties.

December 8th is Bodhi Day which commemorates the day when Siddhartha Gautama - the historical Buddha - attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.

According to Buddhist tradition, Siddhartha meditated for 49 days, overcoming various temptations and achieving enlightenment, becoming the Buddha. Bodhi Day is observed by Buddhists worldwide through meditation, prayer, and acts of kindness.

Some Buddhists decorate their Bodhi trees or their homes with colorful decorations, symbolizing the enlightenment of the Buddha. Lighting candles and participating in community gatherings for prayer and reflection are also part of the observance.

Buddhist traditions also incorporate a special tea known as “Bodhi tea” during the celebration. Recognizing the first day of Hanukkah, let’s delve into the history behind the dreidel!

The dreidel, a spinning top used in a game during Hanukkah, has historical roots linked to Jewish resistance during the Seleucid rule in ancient Israel.

The Seleucid king outlawed Jewish practices, leading to clandestine gatherings. When Greek soldiers approached, Jews would quickly switch from studying the Torah to playing dreidel, creating the appearance of innocent entertainment.

The four Hebrew letters on the dreidel - Nun, Gimel, Hey, and Shin - form an acronym for “Nes Gadol Haya Sham,” meaning “A great miracle happened there.” This references the miracle of the oil that is central to the Hanukkah story!

The Hannukkah story revolves around the miracle of the oil. In the 2nd century BCE, the Maccabees, a Jewish rebel group, reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem from the Seleucid Greeks. Upon rededicating the Temple, they found only enough ritually pure olive oil to light the menorah for one day. Miraculously, the small quantity of oil lasted for eight days, allowing time to prepare more. This event is commemorated during Hanukkah by lighting the menorah over eight nights.

Today’s LH Discovery:
The oldest known dreidel is believed to date back to the 16th century and is currently housed in the Jewish Museum in Prague @jewishmuseum_prague. This ancient dreidel is made of deer horn and is intricately decorated.

St. Nicholas Day, celebrated on December 6th, honors St. Nicholas, a Christian saint known for his generosity. The tradition originated in the Netherlands and spread to other European countries.

St. Nicholas is often depicted as a gift-giver, and the day involves various customs, including leaving shoes out to be filled with treats. Over time, the celebration has involved with different cultures adapting the customs in unique ways!

🇳🇱 In the Netherlands, St. Nicholas, or “Sinterklaas,” arrives by boat, accompanied by his helpers, the “Zwarte Pieten” (Black Peters). Children leave out shoes to be filled with sweets and small gifts. In some places, parades and festive events mark the occasion.

🇩🇪 In Germany, children clean and polish their boots the night before, and St. Nicholas fills them with chocolates, fruits, and toys.

🇫🇷 In parts of France, St. Nicholas is accompanied by “Père Fouettard,”, a character who punishes naughty children.

The phrase “Keeping Up with the Joneses” originated in the early 20th century and is often used to describe the social phenomenon of comparing oneself to others in terms of material possessions and status.

Arthur “Pop” Moman’s comic strip “Keeping Up with the Joneses” debuted in 1913 and ran for over 26 years. The comic strip humorously depicted the challenges faced by the McGinis family as they tried to emulate the lifestyle of their wealthier neighbors, the Joneses.

However, it is necessary to take a further step back as the use of the name Jones predates Momand’s comic strip in works from English writer E.J Simmons, American humorist Mark Twain, as well as D.W. Griffith.

An additional twist to the history behind this common idiom is that the Joneses may refer to the wealthy family of Edith Wharton’s father. The Joneses were an extremely prominent New York family with ties to Chemical Bank who lived a life of luxury in their multiple grand homes. Their 24-room gothic villa called Wyndcliffe spurred other privileged families such as the The Astors and the Vanderbilts (who eventually surpassed the Joneses in terms of wealth and social status) to build bigger and better homes, hence “Keeping Up with the Joneses.”

While there may not be one clear answer on how this expression came to be, there is no question that the Joneses symbolize those peers or neighbors that individuals tend to compare their lifestyles and possessions to, a large contribution to social pressures and expectations.

As we gather around the table to celebrate all that we are thankful for, let’s take a moment to ponder the history of this Thanksgiving Day! Most of my fellow Americans are familiar with the stories we learned in grade school but we hope to share a few more tidbits we learned in our research!

The history of Thanksgiving in the United States has its roots in a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English Pilgrims (Puritans) of Plymouth Colony and the Wampanoag people. The Pilgrims, who had settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts, faced a harsh first winter on a new continent, and the Native Americans played a crucial role in helping them adapt to their new environment and learn agricultural techniques.

The three-day feast was a communal celebration, expressing gratitude for a successful harvest and fostering a sense of unity between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag. While this event is often considered the “First Thanksgiving,” similar harvest celebrations occurred in other English colonies as well.

For many years, Thanksgiving observances were sporadic and varied by location. During the American Revolution, some states and regions observed days of thanksgiving, but nothing consistent.

In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation establishing Thanksgiving as a national holiday. He set the date as the final Thursday in November, and this tradition continued until 1939. In an effort to boost the economy, during the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to the fourth Thursday in November, where it remains today.

While turkey is a central part of modern Thanksgiving dinners, there is no historical evidence that it was the main course at the 1621 feast. We are in awe of this splendid early antique Gustavian style secretary cabinet made in Sweden circa late 19th century from @modernantiquarian! So much that we are going to dive into both the historian of secretary cabinets and Gustavian style furniture!

Secretaries date back to 17th century France and were initially small writing desks with a hinged fall-front, providing a convenient space for writing. Over time, this evolved into larger, more elaborate pieces that often included drawers, compartments, and a bookcase on top.

In the 18th century, secretaries gained popularity across Europe, with different regions adopting their own stylistics influences (we cannot wait to feature Chippendale and French Bureau du Roi!).

Moving along in our exploration of design and architectural styles throughout history, we come to Classic Architecture (c. 850 AD-476 AD)!

During the period between the rise of the Greek Empire and the fall of the Roman Empire, classic architecture flourished. The Romans had borrowed heavily from the earlier Greek and Hellenistic styles, but their buildings were more highly ornamented. They used Corinthian and composite style columns along with decorative brackets. The invention of concrete allowed the Romans to build arches, vaults, and domes, emphasizing grand structures while Greek elements - such as columns and orders, also played a significant role. It was a time of monumental construction and the establishment of architectural principles that continue to influence design today.

The Colosseum, an iconic amphitheater, showcased grandeur and engineering prowess. The Pantheon, with its impressive dome and Corinthian columns, exemplifies Roman innovation. Temples, such as the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus, were very common.

Greek influence is evident in the use of classical orders like Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns with their often intricate and detailed design and craftsmanship. Greek temples like the Parthenon in Athens set standards for symmetry and proportion. The Acropolis, a citadel with various buildings, reflects Greek architectural achievements.

Roman aqueducts, like the Pont du Gard, demonstrate advanced engineering. The Arch of Constantine and Triumphal Arch of Titus showcase monumental arches. Theses structures reflect the cultural and engineering achievements of classical architecture during the specified period.

Classical architecture had a profound influence on the design of buildings in Western colonies around the world!

Today’s LH Discovery: The Pantheon in Rome has a remarkable dome with an oculus (an opening at the top) boasting a diameter that is equal to the heigh from the floor to the top of the dome. This perfect proportion adds to the building’s architectural marvel. 💡🌎

Every year, people from all over the world don creative costumes and celebrate the mystic, the ghoulish, and sometimes the downright scary! But did you know that Halloween actually stems from Celtic traditions relating to the end of the harvest season?

Halloween has ancient Celtic roots, with the holiday Samhain being a precursor. Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter in Celtic culture (modern day Ireland, United Kingdom, and northern France). This event recognized that a time of preparation for the harsh winter months aheads. It was believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the living and the dead was blurred, allowing spirits to roam the earth. People lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off these spirits!

When Christianity spread to Celtic regions, November 1st became All Saints’ Day, and the night before, Samhain, evolved into All Hallows’ Eve- currently known as Halloween.

Let’s take a look at some Halloween traditions from around the world!

United States and Canada: Trick-or-treating where children dress in costumes and go door-to-door receiving candy and treats; pumpkin carving, haunted houses, and costume parties.

Ireland and Scotland: People may set an extra place at the dinner table for deceased family members.

Mexico: Dia de los Muertos honors the deceased with ofrendas (altars) featuring food, marigolds, and sugar skulls.

China: Yue Lan, The Hungry Ghost Festival, involves lighting lanterns and setting out food to honor the spirits of deceased ancestors.

Japan: Obon is a Buddhist festival to honor deceased ancestors.

Austrian and Germany: Kaspar Hauser Day remembers the mysterious Kaspar Hauser who appeared in Nuremburg in 1828.

Philippines: On Pangangaluluwa, children go from house to house singing and asking for prayers for the souls of the dead.

Let’s take a look at their contributions to medical science throughout the years!
The concept of portable medicine kits can be traced to ancient civilizations, including the Greeks and Romans. These early apothecaries used boxes to store herbs, tinctures, and tools.

During the Middle Ages, apothecaries became more established as a profession. They continued to use portable cases to store and transport their remedies. These cases were often made of wood and equipped with compartments for various ingredients.

The Renaissance saw advancements in medicine and the study of pharmacology. Traveling apothecary cases became more sophisticated, with compartments for vials, mortars and pestles, scales, and other essential tools.
During the Age of Exploration, as European explorers ventured to distant lands, they carried traveling apothecary kits to treat various ailments and diseases they might encounter. These kits played a vital role in early attempts at international trade.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, apothecary cases became increasingly ornate. They were often made of fine materials such as wood, leather, or metal and featured intricate designs and were customizable.

As modern medicine developed, the need for traveling apothecary cases diminished. Today, they are primarily of historical interest and can be found in museums but they enabled healthcare professionals to carry essential remedies wherever they went, from ancient times to the early modern period.

Today’s LH Discovery: Traveling apothecaries included a mortar and pestle for grinding and mixing medicines and, as precision was crucial in compounding medicines, scales and weights were often provided to measure ingredients accurately. Also, not all apothecaries or physicians carried deadly poisons or toxic herbs but those who did would store items in the back of the case to prevent any type of contamination or accidental usage.

This stunning Dutch bombe dresser, made in the Netherlands in the late 19th century, features a sinuous serpentine silhouette, a beautiful book-matched veneer, and acanthus leaf details with exquisitely carved paw feet.

Dutch bombe furniture originated in 18th century Netherlands with the term "bombe" (of French origin literally meaning bomb-shaped) referring to the distinctive curved, bulging shape often associated with French Rococo and Baroque styles. This style of furnishing is characterized by its graceful curves, intricate marquetry, and ornate brass or bronze hardware.

This style was heavily influenced by Louis XV designs which were incredibly popular in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. Dutch craftsmen, who had access to woods from all over the world, adapted these design elements to create their own unique interpretations of bombe furniture enhanced by beautifully carved details, floral motifs, and rich veneers.

The term "bombe" is sometimes spelled "bombay" when describing a this style of furniture but has no correlation to Bombay, India (presently known as Mumbai). The bombe, already all the rave, was a favorite furniture piece of King Louis XV (as well as that of his mistress, Madame de Pompadour) when he began to rule France in 1743.

The Lifestyle Historian recognizes United Nations Day!
